Drew Ward, 2014 Draft Prospect

Drew Ward is an incredible player. But let me put this into context for you.

Something about Drew Ward is very unique that needs to be considered. I have 11/25/94 as his birth date(via Perfect Game). If this is accurate, he is just over ONE year younger than Francisco Lindor, a 2011 draft pick. Drew Ward is a 2014 draft pick. That is THREE years later.
Ward is playing against much younger competition and he should be smoking them. On the other hand Bryce Harper, another clear top prospect early in high school, has dominated OLDER competition. You can not compare the two.

CLARIFICATION: Ward isn't dominating younger competition as he is playing up against older competition at showcases, but he is still older than the majority of the players from his draft class and will eventually have to play down as he is just a sophomore now unless he opts to attend a JC or college early.
Ward is also about a month OLDER than currently hyped prospect Ronald Guzman. Guzman could be in Low A when Ward is a senior if all goes right. Age needs to be factored in to this, and heavily if his birth date is right.

Thinking About the #1 Overall Pick

I like to think outside the box. Many of you who have read my writings over the past couple of years know that. I don't do it to be different or to get attention, I do it because it's who I am. I have never done things the way I have been taught. I always look for different paths to the same end. I remember in 7th grade math class a teacher was teaching us Algebra. I had never seen anything like this before but it was interesting to me. He started to show a problem and each step of how the process worked. I understood it. Then I turned him off. I sat at my desk, looked at the next problem and found a way of doing it that was quicker and easier, eliminating steps. Isn't that the best way to learn something. Why do I need 7 steps when I can do it in 3? Why do things the way everyone tells you too when doing something else will end up better?

That is my point. Why spend 10 million on a draft when you have 25 and could get that much return and then some? That was my question in 2010 and 2011. Why spend $7.2 million on the top pick and only have $4 million to spend on the other 10 top picks? That is my question for 2012. I don't have the new CBA, no one does that I know of, so I can't really look for loopholes. However, with the #1 overall pick, there is an obvious one to me.

The Astros' advantage this season is their ability to make 9 people millionaires. The 1st overall pick would get an offer of 3.5 million dollars from me at the most. I would maybe take someone along the lines of James Ramsey, Tyler Naquin that I think would take that type of money. I'm just speculating here but scouts would have a good idea of who would jump at that kind of money. Maybe even a high level talent would accept that. I don't know.

This is all speculation right now. I don't know if this would be a good idea or not. The fact that I already have a player in my shadow Astros system that is in the running at theat #1 spot gives me this option. There are a lot of branches to this. I don't know if what I am suggesting works within the CBA. I assume you can offer under slot and still get compensation the following year if they don't sign. I don't know that as fact.

So, we wait until the CBA is done so I can find a good loophole.

What am I talking about, I'd probably just take Giolito and enjoy adding him to this loaded system.
