New Bats May Alter the College Game

I just read an article by Aaron Fitt over at Baseball America talking about the new bats that will be used in Division I baseball this year. It's causing some controversy because it will likely decrease the offense in games.
The main reason it's being done is for safety, which I agree with. As a former pitcher, one of the reasons I didn't continue to play after high school was the ridiculous pop in aluminum bats. I was hit by a lot of comebackers, it's part of the game. Most of the time it left a little bruise and didn't hurt much but if it would have hit me in the head, it would have been a different story. Once, I was fielding a bunt, or what was supposed to be a bunt from about 40 feet and I had seam marks on my chest and a baseball sized bruise for over a week. If it would have been a foot higher, I may not be here. This could have happened with wood, but I think any time a sport is adjusted to be more like the pro version, I think it's a good idea.
It may decrease homers but good hitters will still hit. It may just make hitters hit for gaps instead of for the fences and improve their game a few years quicker than they have to if they continue into pro ball.

Night time notes

Just reading thru the chat on BA from today for the Pioneer League and Matt Eddy passed on the question due to lack of perspective, here it is:
Erick (Columbus): At 18 years old, if Yorman Rodriguez had been coming out of high school this spring and eligible for the draft, where do you project he would have been selected?

I'm not Jim Callis but I have a good handle on the draft from this year. I believe he would have been a 1st rounder based on tools. I would place him after Josh Sale in the polished hitter category, but Sale is not the athlete or toolbox that Rodriguez is. He doesn't have the power that Michael Choice has or the speed Gary Brown does. Delino DeShields has the blood lines of a major leaguer and Kyle Parker has the football pedigree that the Rockies like so much. Jake Skole had the signability the Rangers were looking for. I don't think the Astros would have took him that high but the A's may have looked at him at #10, as they have been taking high ceiling athletes lately. He fits the mold the Rays like in top picks and I don't think he would have made it out of the 1st round with the group of OF's in this years class.

All League Top Prospects Posted

I was going spread them out to just stay ahead of Baseball America but I'm getting really busy with school so I thought I'd just post them now. I wanted to post my info before the real experts to see the results. I have missed a few guys on the lists they have put out already. They are guys who have the stuff that scouts like. Every guy I've missed has been in my honorable mention area, but I didn't post those.
I am now going to work on team lists, my top 2000 list and more draft stuff. I will post more stuff besides lists over the winter.
I'd also like to thank all the repeat visitors to the site. I surpassed 150,000 visitors today and that is way more than I ever thought I'd get. I hope you enjoy the site and if there is anything else that you'd like to see, let me know.

Enny Romero and his future.

I got a question via Twitter from @MsMLB_MiLB about what kind of player Enny Romero, the pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, will be.

The Dominican born Enny ranked 13th on my list of top prospects for the Appalachian League this season. He is a 6'3" Lefty with a lean body at 165 LBS which means he's projectable. In 2008, he pitched in the Dominican Summer League. His numbers were good with 20 K’s and 8 BB’s in 16.1 IP. He only allowed 11 hits and 5 ER. Comparing his 2008 numbers to pitchers in the DSL this season, he would still sit outside the top 40 prospects but he would be on my follow list. The DSL is such a pitching dominated league.

He moved to the Gulf Coast League in 2009 where his main issue was his control, walking 21 in 39.1 innings. That isn’t a bad debut in the states but again, it didn’t gain him a lot of attention. Then he really seemed to put things together this season. He started all 14 games he pitched in and averaged over 5 IP/game. He kept his WHIP to .955, struck out 72 and walked only 14 while leading the league in ERA. This earned him a short promotion to the New York Penn League where he made one start, walked 5, struck out 4 and only allowed one hit, a HR.

When looking for similar results to his for a basis for a projection, I see some familiar names. I also see a lot of guys who didn’t make it. One of the hardest things to find is someone who threw as many innings as he did. Many of the players that pitch in the Appalachian are draft picks from that season and don’t play the whole season, or are promoted mid-season because of performance, so I just looked for similar rates.

I found 3 names that had similar numbers. Alex Smit was the first. He pitched 28.1 IP in 2004. He Struck out 43 and walked only 10 while posting a 1.235 WHIP. His K rate and command were better than what Romero posted, but Romero pitched more innings and was more efficient, giving up less base runners. Smit lost some control after being promoted to the Midwest League in 2005 before hitting a wall in 2007. His K rate fell drastically and his BB rate was poor. He changed organizations but has yet to get past AA. Smit never got a lot of credit as a top prospect. He was an international signing, as was Romero.

Troy Patton put up good numbers in the Appalachian in 2004 after getting drafted in the 9th round and signing for $550,000. Patton only pitched less than half as many innings but had a better K/9(10.3) rate and BB/9(1.61) rate but allowed more hits/9(7.4). Their ERA was within .02 of each other. He followed that season with a great year, split between the South Atlantic League and the Carolina League and jumped into Baseball America’s top 100 prospects. He made it to the majors in 2007 but then got hurt and has not regained his past form.

Adam Wainwright was drafted in 2000, 29th overall. He had a nice season in 2000. He split time between the Appalachian and the Gulf Coast League pitching 61.1 IP, striking out 81 and walking just 12. He had a WHIP of .897 and was rated the 97th best prospect by Baseball America after the 2000 season.

Looking at these 3 players, it shows 3 outcomes that could happen to Romero. Many more outcomes are possible but I would guess he follows a similar path of Patton, hopefully without the injuries. That means that he won’t get a lot of prospect attention yet this off-season, but if he follows it up with a good year in the Midwest League, where he should spend the whole season if the Rays continue their approach with their arms, he should then get a lot of attention.

Oswaldo Arcia had a great season in the APPY this year. He hovered around the .400 mark all year before fading at the end to a .375/.424/.672 slash line. These numbers are really impressive and when I looked back for some similar seasons in the APPY league. Looking at other 19 year olds, I have to go back a ways. Humberto Cota in 1998 had a good season but did not hit like Arcia. He only hit .310 and slugged .580 but it’s close. He never did do much in the big leagues, but he did get there. Michael Restovich is the next name to be similar. He was a Twins prospect as well back in 1998, hitting .355/.489/.607. He didn’t hit as many triples, but otherwise the numbers are quite similar. Restovich actually had a better contact rate and walked more but that only led to 297 career plate appearances in the Bigs. I have one last 19 year old to name. He was picked 13th overall in 1991 and debuted shortly after in the APPY and hit .326/.426/.679 in 215 AB. He had 19 HR’s to Arcia’s 14. He made contact 6% more and walked 8% more and went on to hit 555 HR’s to date. Manny Ramirez had a better season, but this is the hope that we all have when we prospect. Is Oswaldo Arcia the next Mike Restovich or is he the next Manny Ramirez or somewhere in-between? We will see.

Arizona League Top Prospects

Rodriguez projects to have plus power although it didn't show up a lot in the AZL. Cuthbert is a solid athlete and held his own in the AZL. Pimentel's walk rate was miniscule and his contact rate was just poor but his power was impressive. Cam Bedrosian shows a lot of polish and has great genetics for pitching. Contact issues are a common denominator here, as Arias had issues, but when he hit it, it went for extra bases often. Donvan Tate had the poorest performance of the top 10 but due to his potential, he deserves a spot. While Hembree doesn't project as a starter, his season was very good and he deserves a spot here and could move fast. Torreyes dominated in the VSL and moved up to Arizona and continued to hit. He only struck out 5 times in 89 Plate Appearances. He could be one to watch. I really like Ryan Bolden. He is very athletic and just looks like a star in waiting. I think I underrated him prior to the draft. I like Max Walla but his contact rate was just horrendous this season.

Now, for a little experiment. I came up with a formula using past performances by minor leaguers, isolating skills that make players more likely to become Major Leaguers. A small percentage of players from this level make it to the majors, 4-6%. Of the top 40, here is a list in the order of their MLB likelihood according to my newest formula. I think higher levels will work better and this will take 5 years or better to prove out but here it is for future use.

Gulf Coast League Top Prospects

Gary Sanchez demolished the GCL and landed at the top of the list because of it. Sano did well in the DSL before coming to the GCL and showing why the Twins maid him a rich man last season. Flores did very well and even got a few at bats in Hi A ball to end the season. The young German Max Kepler showed off his fantastic athletic ability along with a pretty swing. Juan Urbina has good pitching genetics and great ability to go with it. Eddie Rosario draws Bobby Abreu comparisons and put up Abreu-like numbers in his debut. Marisnick is a potential 5 tool outfielder as is Cayonez. Vinicio joins a loaded Red Sox system but needs to walk a little more. Polanco is known more for his defense than bat but made contact 94% of the time and was only 16.

Last season's top prospect Cesar Ciurcina had a good season in the GCL, #4 Rafael Ortega crushed the ball in the Pioneer League. Pedro Guerra was up in the Midwest League, though his control was erratic. Many others moved up to the Gulf Coast League and continued their development. Here is this seasons Top 40 performances from the VSL. There are a lot of prospects in the DSL and many didn't make this list including Miguel Sano, Gian Arias, Wil Solano, Luis Jolly and Santiago Nessy just to name a few.

MiLB Prospects Minor League Player of the Year

Freddie Freeman, Jesus Montero, Mike Trout, Jonathan Singleton and Mike Stanton had the best numbers for hitters for the season in my system.
John Lamb, Madison Bumgarner, Robbie Erlin, Julio Teheran and Stephen Strasburg had the best numbers for pitchers but when the dust settled...the Winner is..

Mike Trout

After making a mockery out of the Midwest League, he continued to display the stunning tools and put up amazing stats for his age in the California League.
Jesus Montero was not far behind as were Freddie Freeman and Mike Stanton.

Venezuelan Summer League Top Prospects

Here you will find something NO OTHER site does, that I'm aware of. That is rank the DSL and VSL prospects. This is a purely statistical analysis.
Some repeats from last season in Eugenio Suarez, Ivan Ramirez and Omar Narvaez. That's not a good thing, because players should progress rapidly past this phase.
Last years #1 prospect, Erasmo Ramirez, had a very good season in the Midwest League this season. Many others moved up to the Gulf Coast League and continued their development. Here is this seasons Top 40 prospects from the VSL.

Prospect Season is upon us!

I am done getting stats for all the leagues and I'm ready to start analyzing them. I have less time now, so posting may get a little streaky, but the regular visitors probably already realize that.

I have done a lot of research in the past couple months and have added a few more steps to further isolate the best of the best. I know that using historical results to project future results is not a good way to go but knowledge of any sort is good as long as it is used properly.

Coming up first is the top prospects for each league. I may do 2 versions, top performances and top prospects. I have a database of all the players and their details, and then a spreadsheet of this season statistics. It'll take a while to merge the two, so the top prospect list may take a little longer. The performance lists won't take as long.

Afther that, I will do the top prospects by team. I may mix in best tools and whatever else grabs my attention. If you have anything specific you are looking for, just ask.

I will mix in some draft stuff thru winter as I get more info. I have over 2000 names for draft eligible players between 2011 and 2015 to continue to research, so I've got plenty to work on when I have time.

And of course, the annual top 2000 will be out this spring!
