The International signing season typically begins on July 2nd each season, but there are others who can sign, as they have reached the eligible age.
Adeiny Hechevarria broke open the season by signing for $10 million over 4 years with the Toronto Blue Jays. He won't have the glove that fellow Cuban defector Jose Iglesias has, but will be a solid SS. It was good enough for Cuba to move Jose Iglesias over to 2B in 2007 at the World Junior Championships. His bat will play better than Iglesias' in my opinion, at least with the power aspect.
Jean Carlos Batista is a switch hitting shortstop who just signed with the Houston Astros. He was hitting .283 in 15 games in the newly formed Dominican Prospect League(DPL). He showed solid defense at SS, but at 6'2", 175 LBS, he will probably have to move off short to 3B but could be a solid SS for a few years until he outgrows the position. He will begin his pro career in the Dominican Summer League(DSL).
Michael Feliz is a 6'4" RHP who has a good downhill motion and can throw in the low 90's. Oakland recently signed him from the DPL and he could be one of the better pitchers in the DSL this season.
Erik Olivo is a similar 6'3", 185LB RHP who can throw in the low 90's and has a decent slider besides. He recently signed with the Yankees for $300,000. The signing is pending due to his age, which is allegedly 19.
Eduard Reyes did not last long in the DPL before the 19 year old was signed by the Brewers. He pitched 8.1 IP over 5 games, walked 2, gave up 2 hits and K'd 15. He may make it to the states later this year to pitch in the Gulf Coast League.
As of July 2nd, one name to watch is Yoel Araujo. He looks like a future star CF. He has a great swing that looks like it could generate a lot of power, especially if he bulks up a little. He has great speed, a good arm and will more than likely, be a millionaire come July.
Esteilon Peguero is a 6'1", 185 LB shortstop. He has long limbs and good actions in the field. He generates a lot of power with his swing. He has been putting up some of the best offensive numbers in the DPL and looks like a future star. I'm sure he'll struggle with good breaking balls at first, but his selectivity in the DPL shows that he has a good plate approach.
A few other names for July 2nd are:
Geronimo Fransua, LHP
Edwin Moreno, RF
Hector Veloz, 3B
Carlos Pereira, 3B
Jefferson Olacio, LHP
Iago Januarrio, P
Raul Mondesi, OF..not as good as his father, but could be a decent pro ball player.
More to come as the day approaches...
