I have been slow on posts. It's coming up to the end of the semester and I am doing my best to get thru spring semester. Going back to school has been tough on me.
Also, I haven't had much for ideas of what to write about. I could write some blurbs about what some players have been doing, but I don't know, I haven't been inspired by anything yet.
Dustin Ackley is hitting poor, Mike Stanton is hitting a ridiculous amount of home runs and Stephen Strasburg is living up to the hype. One of these days I'll write about something important, but for now, I want to talk about Ryan Howard's contract.
He is 30 years old and is now signed thru 2016, 2017 if you count the option. By the end he will be 37, even more out of shape and poor defensively, I would guess.
I just can't see him being a good first baseman past 2014. He may continue to keep hitting well, but not at an MVP type rate, and living up to that contract. I understand they want to lock up their future but he isn't Teixeira or Mauer and shouldn't be paid that way. Ruben Amaro can defend the signing and it is hard to let a superstar walk but they may have been better off getting the two draft picks and making a push to get Prince Fielder or Adrian Gonzalez when they become free agents.
I have a feeling Howard isn't going to age well, but the current situation may not end much differently than Howard's promotion to the majors, when he was waiting behind Jim Thome. I have a feeling Jon Singleton will be waiting in the wings in 2015 and ready to step in full time in 2016 if not earlier.
