Atlanta Braves Top 40 Prospects

1 Jason Heyward , OF , ATL
Heyward is a great prospect. As he develops and gains power, he will probably loose some speed and range in the OF. Great Prospect.
2 Freddie Freeman , 1B , ATL
Freeman has all the tools to be a big league 1B, he just needs time for the power to come around.
3 Julio Teheran , P , ATL
Teheran is blessed with a great arm. He put up great numbers in rookie ball and held his own in Low A ball as an 18 year old. If he stays healthy, he could be a good one.
4 JJ Hoover , P , ATL
Hoover dominated Low A ball this year. He has 3 potentially plus pitches. Another Braves arm to watch for.
5 Randall Delgado , P , ATL
Delgado dominated Low A ball this year. May be the most overlooked Braves pitching prospect in a while.
6 Mike Minor , P , ATL
Minor is a polarizing player. Some love him, some hate him. I think he will be a solid #3 guy, but in this system he may be a 4 or 5.
7 Zeke Spruill , P , ATL
Spruill was another great arm on the Rome staff. He has a good 3 pitch mix with great command. He could end next year in AA.
8 Brett Oberholtzer , P , ATL
Oberholtzer has mediocre stuff but has great control. It will be interesting to see if his gaudy numbers hold up at higher levels.
9 Craig Kimbrel , P , ATL
Kimbrel struggled a little in high A but progressed up to AAA by the end of the season, albeit for only 2 IP.
10 Adam Milligan , OF , ATL
Milligan hit really well in Low A. He hit 10 HR in in 197 AB and could be one to watch next season. All the tools are there.
11 Cody Johnson , OF , ATL
Johnson can crush the ball on the occasion that he hits it. He hit 32 HR's and struck out 171 times.
12 Dimaster Delgado , P , ATL
Delgado had a great strikeout rate and great control. I'll have to trust the stats on this one.
13 Christian Betancourt , C , ATL
Betancourt had a nice debut. He hit well and is a decent defender. He has a lot of upside at this age.
14 Robinson Lopez , P , ATL
Lopez was signed out of the DR as a 16 year old with some polish. Can hit 96. I like this guy
15 Brandon Hicks , SS , ATL
Hicks is still having a tough time making contact. He hit 10 HR's and stole 17 bases but is a disappointment at this point.
16 Cole Rohrbough , P , ATL
Which is the real Rohrbaugh? 2008 or 2009. I have a feeling it's in the middle but I don't know if that will be enough to be more than a lefty bullpen arm.
17 Brett Devall , P , ATL
Devall looked good in Low A this year but only thru 53 IP. He was young for the league and had good numbers. Could be in the top 10 next year. Especially if he makes it to high A next season.
18 Scott Diamond , P , ATL
Diamond has decent stuff but could be a decent bullpen arm.
19 Christopher Masters , P , ATL
Masters had a nice debut in rookie ball but was considerably older than his peers. Lets see what he does in full season ball.
20 Jose Ortegano , P , ATL
Ortegano has a decent fastball, curve, and a top notch change that is his out pitch.
21 Danilo Alvarez , P , ATL
Alvarez pitched well in rookie ball and could be a sleeper in the Braves system. Keep an eye on this guy.
22 Mycal Jones , SS , ATL
Jones is a toolsy athlete that the Braves think highly of. I put him in as high as he is due to his draft status more than anything.
23 Erik Cordier , P , ATL
Cordier was healthy this year but didn't do much with it. He still has a lot of work to do, but he has a chance to be a decent pitcher.
24 David Hale , P , ATL
Hale pitched well in rookie ball, but coming out of Princeton, the test will be at higher levels next season.
25 Edgar Osuna , P , ATL
Osuna had another good season, but not dominant. He could be a good bullpen arm in a few years.
26 Luis Valdez , P , ATL
Valdez looks like he could help out the Atlanta bullpen next season.
27 Cory Harrilchak , OF , ATL
Harrilchak was a 1st team all SEC player this season and a 14th rder in 2009. Was old for the APPY league but hit very well.
28 Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg ATL
Hmmm…Spanjer-Furstenburg is 21 in rookie ball and hardly played at Florida Atlantic so I'm not sure if this is a trend or a mirage.
29 Aaron Northcraft , P , ATL
Northcraft is a big strong guy who has a good fastball and a hard slider. I am confident he will be a good player.
30 Jeff Lyman , P , ATL
Lyman is another pitcher with a solid arm that could help the bullpen in 2010.
31 Cory Gearrin , P , ATL
Gearrin is another solid righty who could be a bullpen arm in 2010.
32 Luis Sumoza , OF , ATL
Sumoza showed good pop in 2008 for Boston, but hasn't hit since coming to ATL. Needs more power to move up in the system and up this list.
33 Thomas Berryhill , P , ATL
Berryhill can hit 97 but is undersized. I think he could be a good setup man by 2011.
34 Eric Campbell , 3B , ATL
Campbell didn't hit this year and was suspended twice for off field issues. Ignore.
35 Bennino Pruneda , P , ATL
Pruneda has a big arm for a short righty. He needs to cut back on his walks and he could be a backend of the bullpen guy.
36 Ryne Reynoso , P , ATL
Reynoso was a starter this year in AA but seems to be destined for middle relief to me.
37 Tyler Stovall , P , ATL
Wow, look at Stovalls walks, 56 in 52 IP. He was effectively wild with a 3.12 ERA. He has a high ceiling but he has a long way to go to get there.
38 Freddy Gamboa , OF , ATL
Gamboa signed last year as a 16 year old out of Colombia and only got a few AB's in the DSL, but he has a lot of upside.
39 Concepcion Rodriguez , OF , ATL
Rodriguez has shown power in the past but didn't in AA this season. If he show power this season in AA, he could be a good prospect.
40 Todd Redmond , P , ATL
Redmond has mediocre stuff and decent control. 5th starter at best.

Diamondbacks top prospects

This is my first team of the year so I may adjust it some before all is said and done.

1 Jarrod Parker , RHP , ARZ
Parker has some of the best stuff in the minors will be on hold until 2011 because of Tommy John surgery.
2 Brandon Allen , 1B , ARZ
Allen won't walk a lot and will K plenty, but should hit a ton in Arizona, especially against RHP.
3 Bobby Borchering , 3B , ARZ
Sweet swinging Borchering is a switch hitter has been compared to Chipper Jones.
4 Marc Krauss , OF , ARZ
Krauss swings a strong bat and has good strike zone judgement. He is a below average OF and will have to be a LF in the bigs. Could be a steal at 64th overall this year.
5 Daniel Schlereth , P , ARZ
Schlereth has great stuff and could be the closer of the future. Just needs to improve his control.
6 Matt Davidson , 1B , ARZ
Davison has big power and has been compared to former D-back Matt Williams. Will need time to develop and cut back on strikeouts.
7 Josh Collmenter , RHP , ARZ
Collmenter has a mediocre fastball, but mixes pitches well and knows how to pitch.
8 A.J. Pollock , OF , ARZ
Pollock is an athletic college player is good but not great across the board. I see his as Jason Pridie type.
9 Bryan Shaw , P , ARZ
Shaw is a power pitcher and gets a lot of ground balls. If his walk rate improves he could really break out.
10 Mike Belfiore , LHP , ARZ
Belfiore rojects to be a 3rd starter with a decent fastball, curve and change. Debuted in rookie ball, he needs polish.
11 Wade Miley , LHP , ARZ
Miley has very good stuff for a lefty, needs polish. Could be a starter but would be dominant as a lefty out of the pen.
12 Pat McAnaney , LHP , ARZ
McAnaney got hit harder than you would expect with his stuff. I think he could breakout in AA next year.
13 David Nick , SS , ARZ
Nick will probably end up at 2B. He has a unique swing that uses his quick hands to hit line drives. A personal favorite.
14 Barry Enright , RHP , ARZ
Enright did not dominate hitters and I don't expect that he will. He profiles to be a back of the rotation arm.
15 Ryan Wheeler , 1B , ARZ
Wheeler hit very well in pro debut. Great plate discipline, big power. If he can do this next year, look for him near the top of this list.
16 Chris Owings , SS , ARZ
Owings is a player with average skills, but none that blow you away. He can hit and kept up well in pro ball. Should be a solid SS. Not a superstar but a solid player.
17 Eric Smith , P , ARZ
Smith is a strong sinkerballer needs polish but could move quikcly if he puts it together.
18 Evan Frey , OF , ARZ
Speed is Frey's main asset and could be a good 4th OF.
19 Mark Hallberg , 2B , ARZ
Did little to impress in AA this season hitting .249 with next to no power. Could be a useful utility man that can fill in at multiple positions.
20 Matt Torra , RHP , ARZ
Torra hasn't been the same since labrum surgery a few years ago, but is a strike thrower and an innings eater. He is a 4th or 5th starter, probaably a middle reliever. Rule 5 pick?
21 Wes Roemer , RHP , ARZ
Roemer has average stuff and plus command. Should be a successful innings eating 4th or 5th starter.
22 Kevin Eichorn , P , ARZ
Eichorn dominated rookie ball and will be one to watch in full season ball next year. He could move fast if he is used in the bullpen.
23 Rossmel Perez , C , ARZ
Perez is a good defensive catcher that has been rused and has held his own. He is a switch hitter with line drive power.
24 Ollie Linton , OF , ARZ
Linton is a speedy OF who made strides this year. He stole 28 bases while hitting 39 extra base hits. Could be a good 4th OF and if he jumps another notch, he could be a player to watch.
25 Bryan Augenstein , P , ARZ
Augenstein is a big sinkerballer who could make an impact next season whether in the pen or at the back end of the rotation.
26 Collin Cowgill , OF , ARZ
Cowgill was a little old for high A ball and ended up breaking his hand in June, missing the rest of the season. He will play in the AFL this fall. This could help him jump to AA next year.
27 Reynaldo Navarro , SS , ARZ
Navarro showed a little improvement this year while being promoted to the midwest league. He has a lot of tools but needs to refine them
28 Pedro Ciriaco , SS , ARZ
Ciriaco's main asset is stealing 38 bases. Needs to get on base more to utilize his main skill. May be a utility infielder down the line.
29 Bobby Stone , OF , ARZ
Stone is a strong swinging lefty with more power than anything else. He needs to cut back on his k's and walk a little more.
30 Tony Barnette , P , ARZ
Barnette took a step back in his numbers this year in the PCL. It may be the league effecting him, but I'm not real confident in him.
31 John Hester C ARZ
He will be a solid defensive backup in the bigs. He hit well in 3A this season with good pop.
32 Patrick Schuster , P , ARZ
Schuster is known for his no-hitter streak in high school, but will need a lot of polish before he will be considered as a top prospect.
33 Matt Helm , 3B , ARZ
Helm was highly rated in spring but fell in the draft due to a sprained ankle keeping him out most of the year. He did well in rookie ball in the 55 AB he got.
34 Trevor Harden , P , ARZ
Harden didn't do as well as last season as his ratios have slipped. I have confidence in him, but unsure if starting will be his future role.
35 Keon Broxton , 3B , ARZ
Broxton is a toolsy athlete with a lot of power that he can translate to games. He just needs to cut back on his K's. 93 K's in 272 AB is unacceptable.
36 Jeff Dietz , P , ARZ
Dietz has put up great numbers wherever he has gone except for the 6.2 IP he threw in AA this season. Breakout possible.
37 Ryan Cook , P , ARZ
Cook is a sinker/slider pitche with good stats. He could be one to watch.
38 Terry Hose , P , ARZ
Hose is a short righty who dominated batters in Low A and High A.
39 Ryne White , 1B , ARZ
White is short in stature and short in power to contend for a future 1B job.
40 James Skelton , C , ARZ
Good defensively but hit horribly this season. Could be a backup.

Depressed...

I am in 3 different fantasy baseball leagues. Two are extremely deep, 200 man rosters. 24 teams in one, 20 in the other but this is my least complex league and the only one played for money.
For the second consecutive season, I finished 2nd in my dynasty league. Looking back at the original draft, I did pretty well.
It's a 12 team dynasty, $100 entry per year. Head to head points league. 20 man active, 13 reserves, 7 minor leaguers.
Here is my original draft, I had the 1st pick in the snake draft:
1 Albert Pujols (1B STL)
24 Hanley Ramirez (SS FLA)
25 Joe Mauer (C MIN)
48 Ichiro Suzuki (OF SEA)
49 Robinson Cano (2B NYY)
72 C.C. Sabathia (P CLE)
73 Cole Hamels (P PHI)
96 Barry Zito (P SF)
97 Ian Kinsler (2B TEX)
120 Eric Chavez (3B OAK)
121 Nick Markakis (OF BAL)
144 Chien-Ming Wang (P NYY)
145 Adrian Beltre (3B SEA)
168 Tim Lincecum (P SF)
169 Matt Kemp (OF LA)
192 Ryan J. Braun (3B MIL)
193 Mark Prior (P CHC)
216 Willy Taveras (OF COL)
217 Jason Kubel (OF MIN)
240 Ian Stewart (3B COL)
241 Joel Zumaya (P DET)
264 Jonny J. Gomes (DH TB)
265 Wily Mo Pena (OF BOS)
288 Billy Rowell (3B BAL)
289 Felix Pie (OF CHC)
312 Jake Westbrook (P CLE)
313 Kevin Slowey (P MIN)
336 Zack Greinke (P KC)
337 Greg Maddux (P SD)
360 Joel Guzman (3B TB)
361 Sean Rodriguez (SS ANA)
384 Alexi Casilla (2B MIN)
385 Gustavo Chacin (P TOR)
408 Shin-Soo Choo (OF CLE)
409 Kendry Morales (1B ANA)
432 Cedric Hunter (OF SD)
433 Joba Chamberlain (P NYY)
456 Jimmy Barthmaier (P HOU)
457 David Dellucci (OF CLE)
480 Charlie Haeger (P CHW)
481 Hayden Penn (P BAL)
504 Kala Kaaihue (C ATL)
505 Corey C. Hart (OF MIL)
528 Pat Neshek (P MIN)

I have made a few stupid moves, that is for sure. Before the season started I dropped Neshek, Morales, Haeger, Penn, Kaaihue. I also traded Ian Kinsler for Billy Butler....ouch. In May I traded Nick Markakis for Mike Young. Picked up Scott Baker and Placido Polanco off waivers. At this point, I was doing ok, but I wanted to make a run so I traded Zito and Zach Grienke for Carlos Delgado, Trevor Hoffman and Dontelle Willis...boy I regret that one. None of these 3 are on my roster anymore, all cut, and we all know how Grienke is doing. I ended with the 5th best record in the league.
Here comes the good part. In the off-season I made a few trades. I fell for the thought of owning Jay Bruce in a pts league in that park. I traded Pujols, Joba Kemp for Bruce, Vladdy, FMart, Mariano Rivera, Zito and Chase Headley. I did get Pujols back. Later I traded Butler, Headley and Fmart for Pujols and Jeff Clement.
Then, another stupid deal...I traded Ryan Braun and Sean Rodriguez for Lance Berkman.
That off-season I drafted Jason Heyward, Mike Burgess, Chris Tillman, Nick Noonan, Kevin Ahrens and Jordan Walden.
Before the 2008 season, I dropped Eric Chavez for Pedro Feliz. Added Elijah Dukes for Carlos Delgado, dropped Wes Hodges and added Nate McLouth...I'm proud of that pick up.
Later in the season, I gave up on Dontrelle and picked up Aubrey Huff.
I added Michel Ynoa later and in July I traded McLouth for Matt Garza.
I went 48-16 in 2008 and dominated the league but fell flat championship week and finished 2nd.
In the off-season draft I took Buster Posey, Shin Soo Choo(who I had drafted and later dropped) Wilmer Flores, Orlando Hudson, and Andruw Jones. Determined to win it all in 2009 I decided to make more trades to improve my pitching. I should have learned by now. I traded Robinson Cano, Chris Tillman, Ian Stewart, Chien Ming Wand for AJ Burnett and Roy Oswalt. ugg. I also overhauled my minors by adding Martin Perez, Micheal Taylor, Jaff Decker, Matt Moore, Christian Friedrich, Derek Norris, Brett Lawrie, Lon Chisenhall giving up on Jordan Walden, Ynoa, Ced Hunter, Nick Noonan, Jesus Flores and Gio Gonzalez.
The only trade I made this year was when Jay Bruce broke his wrist, I traded him fot BJ Upton.
Again, in 2009 I finished 2nd, oddly enough going 48-16 and again finishing 2nd.
So my question is, what young stud do I trade this year for a crappy old vet?

The main point of this is...in 2007 I had a decent handle on the guys who were going to be future studs like Lincecum, Kemp, Braun, Greinke, Kinsler and took them ahead of other pretty good fantasy players. I just didn't stick with them as I should have.
Maybe this will give confidence to you in what I post here. I hope it does something for you if you are still reading this.
What can I do to finally win it all?

My Method

I use a combination of things, my own mess I came up with. I use K, BB, HA, ER, IP, HRA and Wins for pitchers and R, RBI, BB, AB, K, 3B, SB, TB for hitters. They are turned into scores to calc control, dominance, consistency, power, speed, eye, contact, etc.. I know I use Wins and RBI that could mess up the system because they are not earned simply on a players merits, but they do help to weed out poorer players sometimes.
That is just the stats. I also take into consideration signing bonus/draft status for new draftees and my previous seasons rankings for the rest.
That's where I'm at with these lists. After this, I will put my own spin in on these guys to move them up and down. My goal is to not have to adjust much after the 1st run, but that may take a while.
