Analyzing some of this years top pitchers

Finding comps for hitters was much easier than for the pitchers. So many pitchers flame out, have good stats due to pitchability or get injured. Pitchers are so hard to quantify, but here is what I came up with.

Manuel Banuelos and Martin Perez were both 18 year olds in the SALLY league this season and both are very good prospects. Perez did pitch a little bit in AA this season but the only other 18 year old I have stats on in the Texas league is Felix Hernandez in 2004. Looking at Perez and Banuelos SALLY stats, the comparables jump out as Matt Cain in 2003, Francisco Liriano in 2002 and fellow prospect Brandon Erbe in 2006. Jose Rojas' 2001 season is similar to Banuelos and but Banuelos had a slightly better K rate.

Madison Bumgarner had an unusual season in AA. He really had no comps as he had the lowest K rate and BB rate of any 19 year old in AA that I have. He also had the lowest WHIP of the group and Matt Cain, Joel Zumaya, Hayden Penn, Yusmeiro Petit and Rodney Nye. Bumga…

Analyzing some of this years best hitters

Anthony Gose is at the top of the list and he is there almost strictly because of his speed. The closest comp to him is Jose Reyes in the SAL in 2001, but Reyes had much more pop, but that gives you an idea of his speed upside. But on to better prospects...

Wilmer Flores didn't have a great season in the SAL this year but neither did Ivan Rodriguez in 1989 in the SAL. Flores hit 0.264/0.305/0.331 and Pudge hit 0.238/0.278/0.355. Both were 17 and had similar AB's and production. Pudge hit for a little more power, but it gives you an idea why Flores is a highly touted prospect.

Ruben Tejada finds him in the mix with some pretty good company of Eastern League middle infielders. Rollins, Renteria and Reyes all had good numbers with Tejada having the best OBP, Rollins had the best BB/K rate and the most home run power but they look fairly comparable across the board.
1999 Jimmy Rollins 20 0.273/0.336/0.404
2009 Ruben Tejada 19 0.288/0.351/0.371
1995 Edgar Renteria 20 0.289/0.329/0.388

2009 top 100 hitters, pitchers

using my new formula that I used on the most recent lists I posted. It looks like I have to adjust the formula more. It is too speed heavy at this point.

MiLB Prospects has a forum!

Posting comments on this site isn't easy and now the recent comments widget isn't even working, so I created a forum. The site is getting a good bit of traffic but no one is posting comments and I would like to have more interaction. That's half the fun right?
Please feel free to sign up and post as you please. Any input would be great.

Top 100 Rankings

are posted for the years 2000-2006 for both hitters and pitchers. There was nothing involved involved in these other than the stats.
In my current rankings I have implemented use of draft status and signing bonus info as well as my previous season rating. Then I adjust some guys up and down as I see fit.
I will also post the 2009 stat rankings on here soon.
These rankings seemed to turn out ok. I haven't crosschecked them with lists from BA or anyone else, but it does look like my system has an idea of what to look for.
I'd hope so, for all the work I've put into it.
Thoughts?

I haven't been

working on scouting reports for more teams lately. I have been doing what I prefer and that is analyzing numbers. I have compiled a great deal of stats and am in the process of running my newest formulas on prior seasons to see if I can predict guys who actually succeed. Since this is only my second season of rankings, I want to prove to myself that I know what I am doing, so I am running this statistical experiment.
The first league I did was the International league and the top prospect is Chipper Jones as a 21 year old in 1993. He had a .325/.387/.500 line with 23 SB.
The next 4 were D'Angelo Jimenez in 1999, B.J. Upton in 2005, Jimmy Rollins in 2000 and Derek Jeter in 1995. Right now it seems to be working ok. We'll see how it washes out.
My goal here is to creat something that is of value to you guys and make it available to you. I just want to make sure it is a good product before I do that.

Florida Marlins Top Prospects

1 Michael Stanton , OF , FLA
Stanton has enormous power potential, but only hit .231 in AAHe did strike out a lot, but is only 19 and looks the part. He should be launching HR's in the bigs at some point in 2010 especially with Hermida out of the picture.
2 Logan Morrison , 1B , FLA
Morrison has big power when healthy. He hurt his wrist this season and may need some time in 2010 to get back up to speed. He's decent defnesicely and is an ok defender.
3 Matt Dominguez , 3B , FLA
Dominguez is a defense first, hit second 3B. He will get to the bigs with his glove alone, but don't underestimate his bat. I think he could be a Scott Rolen type.
4 Isaac Galloway , OF , FLA
Galloway is a potential five tool CF, but is still very raw. He slipped to the Marlins in the 8th round last season even though he had the possibility of going as high as the top 10 based on tools. He needs time but could be a star CF someday.
5 Chad James , P , FLA
James has the ability…

Well, I am finally

done with finals, so now I can spend a little less time studying and more on something I enjoy, fanatical research of prospects.
I have been working on stuff from time to time, just not posting any of it. Most of my time has been spent working on a fantasy draft ranking for all the players in the majors. I don't know if anyone here has interest in it, but I'm doing it more for my upcoming free agent seasons in my fantasy leagues.
I've been thinking about creating a .pdf of rank by team, rank by position, maybe even rank by tools, overall list, major league rankings, maybe some video links to sites that have good videos posted. I would also put in this information about dynasty draft rankings for MLB players and potentially integrate the MiLB guys into it. It would probably have a top 150 or so for the 2010 draft. This would take quite a bit of time to create, as right now it is just an ugly spreadsheet and it would take quite a bit more writing than I have right now, but if …

Names to watch in the Rule 5 draft

Hitters:
Koby Clemens, C, HOU
Put up great numbers this season and could catch someones eye. It'd shock me if he could stick though.
Matt McBride, C/1B/OF, CLE
Could be a solid Catcher in the bigs, decent D, bat showing well of late.
Danny Dorn, OF, CIN
Hits everywhere he goes.
Johnny Whittleman, 3B, TEX
Has potential and plate discipline, might be worth a gamble.

Pitchers:
Dallas Buck, P, CIN
I've been a fan since college. Hasn't done as well as I expected but knows how to pitch.
Aneury Rodriguez, P, TB
Maybe the best player available. Still young, projectable and has good stuff.
Will Inman, P, SD
Inman's stuff isn't great but his delivery is unusual and could give him an edge if used out of the pen
Kanekoa Texeira, P, NYY
Did well enough in AA that it isn't too much of a stretch thinking he could help in a big league bullpen.

Some Random Thoughts

I got a new laptop today. It's a school required Dell latitude E6500. I konw nothing about it but I figured I'd break it in a little before studying for finals.

Jake Fox and Aaron Miles ware acquired from the Cubs today by the A's. This looks like a roadblock for Brett Wallace to break with the team this spring. Fox showed some pop this last season and I guess it is possible that he could play a corner outfield spot and even catch on occasion, but this coupled with the signing of Dallas McPherson makes me wonder about their plans. Not like any of these guys are locks to be stars, just more congestion. Oh yeah, Chavez is still signed thru 2010 with an option in 2011 that will not be picked up.

The Polanco signing in Philly confuses me as he is not a 3B in the first place and giving him 3 years at 6 mil each is high to me. He is a 6 mil player next year in my opinion, but I don't think he will be in 2012. I would have went with Beltre if he would have taken a similar deal.…

No progress...

Happy Thanksgiving everyone...belated.
Been really busy the last few days so I've made no progress. Gonna get to work again soon and hopefully have a few updates coming soon.

I do feel a little better about the work I did on the DSL and VSL though.
Ben Badler from Baseball America said this of my lists via Twitter:
I haven't made my calls yet for those leagues, but it looks like you have a lot of the right names there

Dominican Summer League Top Prospects

Here you will find something NO OTHER site does, that I'm aware of. That is rank the DSL and VSL prospects. This is a purely statistical analysis.
I could go deeper but I only went 25 here as I don't know who any of them are past this. I'm not even familiar with most of these guys. I like Mejias, Duran, Calderon, Domoromo, and Morillo the most.

I could go deeper but I only went 25 here as I don't know who any of them are past this. I'm not even familiar with most of these guys. I like Guevara, Cayonez, Narvaez and Purroy the most.

Pittsburgh Pirates Top Prospects

1 Pedro Alvarez , 3B , PIT
Alvarez started the season slowly but tore the cover off the ball at a .333/.419/.590 clip in AA. He still struck out a lot but I don't see that stopping him from being a good ball player. For some reason, whenever I see him, I think of Kevin Young…hmm.
2 Jose Tabata , OF , PIT
Tabata has shown good skill everywhere he plays but the power still hasn't shown up. I'm not worried about that yet as he is only 20 and holding his own in AAA. He had decent plate discipline but needs to work on his baserunning.
3 Tony Sanchez , C , PIT
Sanchez was an overdraft but that doesn't mean he won't be a solid player. He will more than likely be a solid big league catcher and have a decent career, but I don't see him being a star.
4 Tim Alderson , P , PIT
Alderson was aquired from the Giants this season and did not fare well after joining Altoona. I have to wonder if didn't have some fatigue or even an injury. He is projectable…

Interesting Dynasty League Draft going on over here..
http://mlbbonusbaby.com/
Andy Seiler is a great MLB Draft mind and is starting a Dynasty League. Thought it would be worth a post. A lot of 2010, 2011 Draftees going early.
Interesting to see a guy like Stetson Allie go ahead of Randall Grichuk or Rich Poythress.

Great video of Ackley facing Strasburg in the AFL and much more here

I'm working on the Pirates right now, but time has been limited.

Seattle Mariners Top Prospects

1 Dustin Ackley , OF , SEA
Ackley is a sweet swinging lefty who could contend for batting titles in his career. Could join Ichiro in the Seattle OF late in 2010. He needs some time to learn the OF as he was a 1B in college. I love this guy.
2 Micheal Saunders , OF , SEA
Saunders had a great season in AAA but struggled mightily in the majors. He has a chance to break with the big league team. He has all the skills to be a very good big leaguer. They need to set him loose in LF and hope he can hit better than he did in his first try and lay off the off-speed stuff.
3 Carlos Triunfel , SS , SEA
Triunfel missed most of 2009 this season due to a broken fibula but returned at the end of the season. He has great plate discipline and doesn't K much, but I am unsure he will have the same speed as he did. Even if he doesn't, I still think he will be a very good player.
4 Julio Morban , OF , SEA
Over half of Morban's hits in the AZL went for extra bases. He struck out a l…

I'll post more this weekend.

I've fallen behind bacause of all my tests in school. Tough going back after 8 years when I wasn't much of a fan when I was going the first time. I've been tweaking my formulas and working on a different project for the blog once I get done with the rankings for each team.
I'm not sure when I'll roll it out but I have a lot of plans for the coming months.
Hope you guys are enjoying what I'm doing here and continue coming back. I'm getting more hits in a day now than I was in a month earlier this year. THANK YOU!

If anyone wants info on certain players or anything else, let me know.

Baltimore Orioles' Top 40 Prospects

1 Brian Matusz , P , BAL
Matusz was the 2nd pick in the 2008 draft and has done nothing to show that he shouldn't have been. He already made his big league debut and looks to be a lock in the Orioles rotation in 2010.
2 Jake Arrieta , P , BAL
Arrieta occasionally shows the stuff to be a frontline starter but looks like a #3 behind Matusz and Tillman unless he can gain consistency. He should start 2010 in AAA to work on that.
3 Josh Bell , 3B , BAL
Bell was acquired mid season for George Sherill. He was having a decent season before the trade and really picked it up afterwards. He projects as a middle of the order bat if he can keep it up.
4 Zach Britton , P , BAL
Britton is a sinkerballer with a great groundball rate and has a good strikeout rate. That is the formula for a top pitcher. 131 K's, 55 BB's in 140 IP.
5 Brandon Snyder , 1B , BAL
Snyder had a great season in AA hitting .343/.421/.597 , but lost his power in AAA. He needs to find …

Texas Rangers Top 40 prospects

1 Neftali Feliz , P , TEX
Feliz dominated major league hitters with a fastball that routinely approaches triple digits. He may have more of a challenge if he is used as a starter, but he has all the talent to succeed no matter where he pitches.
2 Justin Smoak , 1B , TEX
Smoak did not hit for the power I expected this year, but his approach was very good as was his defense. He really cooled off after his June oblique injury.
3 Martin Perez , P , TEX
Perez was used in starting and relief roles this year in Low A and AA, dominating in the former, but struggling a little in the latter. He was only 19 and has great stuff. He will be on this list again next season, maybe as the top pitcher.
4 Tanner Scheppers , P , TEX
Scheppers has had some shoulder problems and they caused him to fall in the draft, but he has some of the best stuff from this years crop.
5 Robbie Ross , P , TEX
Ross is a small lefty with big stuff. Did very well is short season this seaso…

Washington Nationals Top 40 prospects

I'm changing things up a little. I am only going to post reports for the first 20. I just don't have the time to do the top 40 for all teams. If there is a demand for it, I would do it, but for now I can't continue. If you would be interested in the top 40, email me(garrioch13@yahoo.com)or comment here and if there are enough, I will continue to work on them. I'm doing this blog for me, because I enjoy it, but I want everyone to enjoy it.

OK, here are the Nationals(Bryce Harper not included):
1 Stephen Strasburg , P , WSH
Strasburg is the most hyped prospect as long as I can remember but should live up to it. He is a a future ace. The future may be as soon as next 2010.
2 Derek Norris , C , WSH
Norris looks to be the real deal with 23 HR, 90 BB's and good defense. A personal favorite.
3 Drew Storen , P , WSH
Storen was looked at as a rach at 10th overall but signed quickly and made it to AA and pitched well throughout his pro debut. He could be the Nats …
